One of the best ways to learn about each event is to take the NSDA judge accreditation course for the event. They offer two levels. 

1. A basic judging level including multicultural competence (HIGHLY RECOMMEND) that introduces you to basic speech and debate judging

2. More in-depth courses for individual events. 

Taking these courses can help you better understand the events you are being asked to judge as well as the criterion to use to evaluate the participants.
